Why Missions?

impact_team11.jpgFirst of all, there is a scriptural reason for us as a church to reach out on mission trips. Secondly, it is a major part of what makes up the "Four Pillars" of New Hope Brisbane, and it is even a part of our core values from our very beginning.

From reaching out to our neighbours and family to going to the ends of the earth, New Hope Brisbane is a missions-minded church.

In this section, you can find out not only why we do missions, but also where we've been and future missions opportunities.

Firstly, the best place to start is always with scripture. And the most obvious place to begin is with Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew 28 - "Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." It was Jesus' last command to His followers. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:14, "For Christ's love compels us..." We do it out of obedience, but when we become a Christian, His Spirit comes inside of us, and changes us. His mission becomes our mission. He said in Luke 19:10, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." You don't have to know much about Jesus to know that His whole mission was to reach out to people whom God loved and reconcile them to Him and meet their needs. He said in Matthew 9:37, "Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." Well, we know He has sent us out into the harvest because that was His last commission to His followers. In Romans 10, it says, "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" People are waiting for the good news, we just need to go!

Secondly, two of the "Four Pillars of New Hope Brisbane" are about reaching out through missions...

To share the Good News of Jesus and see lives transformed in Brisbane, Australia, and the World.
"Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings." 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

To build a community that loves one another and reaches out to the poor and needy together.
"He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honours God." Proverbs 14:31

We can start right in our own backyard, but let's not stop there! Let's buckle our seat belts and get ready to go! :)
